North Carolina Fishing and other matters

Hi Folks, my website is infected with some virus so some of you may see random words that are meaningless. This may force me to undertake a long overdue redo of my website.

I apologize for the long time between posts. How time flies when you are shoveling snow. Here is what the front of my house looks like.
I have been busy giving presentations around the eastern US although a few have been snowed out. I apologize to those hoping to see my presentation in Somerset NJ but I was coming down early that Saturday morning and the bulk of the snow was between NJ and Maine and I just couldn’t make it.

I was presenting at the fly fishing show in North Carolina and I had Sunday morning free before flying back to Maine. My future son-in-law and I hopped in a car to the Pisgah National Forest in the North Carolina Mountains, spent the night, and first thing in the morning were on the water at the Davidson River. We fished the stretch below the hatchery (no jokes please).

Even though the morning started cold (ice was freezing on the guides) it was just nice to be fishing. Plus, it is such an exotic environment because of the large Rhododendron bushes all around the water. Because it had been so cold, hold over browns and rainbows were stacked up in the deeper pools (it is not a big river) and there were only a few anglers around. Fishing midge pupa or emerging midge patterns under an indicator (or high-sticking with no indicator), we did well. A welcome respite from the Maine Winter.

The End of the Season

Well, the official season has ended and I have to say, it ended with a whimper instead of a bang. No appreciable rain meant low water, not a lot of fish moving, and those that were available were pounded day and night by desperate fisherman. The Mags, Kennebago, Rangeley River, Moose River, and many others were as low as I have ever seen them. The Roach river had better flows but at the expense of first Roach Pond which looked like it was going to be drained.  It doesn’t feel like fishing to me when there are 100 fish stacked up in a small pool waiting to go upriver, and 8 fisherman flogging the water over them. When one is hooked, I am never completely sure whether they were legitimately hooked, or perhaps snagged in the mouth.

There were a few nice fish to be had in less crowded conditions but they were hard-earned. I did some traveling as I continued to do research my latest project – revising Flyfisher’s Guide to Northern New England  book and ended up in Jackman, Moosehead, and northern Massachusetts. My travels reminded me of the wonderful variety of watersheds and the trout that inhabit them. I will upload some photos from my travels soon.

Pray for rain for good fall fishing

What a strange late summer and early fall. Of course it seems that I write about strange weather more and more lately. Mid-August seemed more like early fall. Days in the upper 60’s, nights in the 40’s and regular rain. Good trout and salmon started their spawning runs early in most of the Rangeley area rivers and streams. Kennebago River was full of salmon and some good trout, all the way up to the dam. Some of the salmon were bright and fat like they were fresh up from the lake. Some were a little thinner and darker and looked like they had been in the river for a few weeks. Others were thin and looked like they came up the river in June. So basically, fish have been migrating upriver all summer.

My future son-in-law Brian and I had one morning when we hooked 30 salmon in one Kennebago River Pool. (and that is no exaggeration). For some reason, the fish didn’t want to chase streamers or dries but nymphing deep with stoneflies in the main flows was deadly. We caught nice salmon and trout in other places as well. Might have been the best fishing in years.

The lake was good too with Hexes emerging throughout August mixed with other mayflies and caddis right at dark. One mayfly looked like a slate gray drake about a size 10/12. Labor Day weekend featured emerging tricos but the fish were very fussy, many short strikes. Finally dug up a trico emerger size 20 in my fly box and that was the ticket.

Now in early September, we have not had significant rain in several weeks and the rivers are low. We have had some hot days and warm nights. Fishing has been very slow in the rivers. It is almost like August weather was like September’s, and now September’s is like August. The fish are still in the rivers but not very active.

Pray for rain. Soon.

October features slow fishing, great weather

Early October continued the trend of warm and dry weather. Rivers and streams remained low and with bright, sunny, and warm conditions, the fish were spooky. One day at Upper Dam, as a client drifted a streamer over a sunken log, I could see a number of fish huddled in the shade under the log flash up and take a look at the fly before hurrying back to cover. The weather did make it glorious to be outside and the foliage was spectacular in places. There were fish to be had in the Rangeley River but one had to stalk them quietly in the low water and fish the smallest nymphs with a long leader.

I can’t really report much about the middle of the month because I was off to Montana for fishing The Big Hole, the Madison, and several creeks. Unlike Maine, the weather out there was 15 to 20 degrees below normal with spitting snow every day. Still, the unsettled days brought some pretty good hatches of midges and Baetis at times and we caught fish.
Further south, Inland Fish and Wildlife has stocked the upper Presumpscot and Royal Rivers with a variety of fish and once the fish get acclimated, fishing should be a lot of fun. I caught a nice brown this morning, nymphing on the Presumpscot. For information about this good fishing spot, see my column in the November issue of the Maine Sportsman.

A Dry Early September

Despite lots of rain in the southern part of Maine, the Rangeley area did not get enough rain to move the rivers much. After fishing hard the first week in September and talking to a number of people, it was clear that the fish hadn’t started moving yet. The temperatures had been fairly warm as well. I did catch several dozen trout and salmon at the old Black Cat dam one day nymphing but they were all (with one exception) of the 6 inch variety. The one exception was a beautiful, fat 18 inch salmon that must have ascended the river from the lake.
The second week of September is bringing much colder temperatures and hopefully with some rain later this week, the fish will be on the move.
