Let me update folks on several things…

First, I will be giving presentations at the Maine Sportsman Show in Augusta on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 1, 2 and 3. Check the schedule on their website. Friday and Saturday my presentation will be “20 Great Fly Fishing Locales that You haven’t Heard of.” Sunday’s presentation will be “Tactics and Locations to Catch Trophy Brook Trout.” I will also be at the Maine Sportsman’s booth Sunday morning and probably other times as well.

Second, I will also be at the Sebago Lake Trout Unlimited Conservation Event/Dinner/Auction on Saturday, April 2 from 4:30 pm. or so on. I will be signing books and wandering around.

Third, let me update you on my books. My first book, “Flyfishing Northern New England’s Seasons,” has been sold out just about everywhere, but the 3rd printing is arriving this week, and will be shipping to stores that have run out. I will have some to sell directly as well and anyone who attended recent talks of mine when they were not available can contact me and I will ship them out to you. My new book, “Fly Fisher’s Guide to New England,” a where-to-go book goes to the printer this week, will be available in Kindle version the week after that, and in the stores to buy in early May. This book is the reason why I have not been seen around much recently. It was an unbelievable amount of work: 4 states, 369 pages of 8 by 11 format, 80 maps, 400 photographs, over 1000 waters described, hatch charts, 100 vacation suggestions, 100 beginner and easy-access suggestions, and a dozen fly patterns. Just the Table of Contents and Indexes are over 10 double column pages. I have been spending some long days doing the final editing, and I  look forward to receiving feedback from readers.

Fourth, The April Issue of the Maine Sportsman is well worth buying. I supplied the cover and this is the issue with the fish stocking section. But also fun is some of the April Fools articles and columns – look for them.

Spring Ice Out for Rangeley

An increasing number of people are now contacting me asking about my projections for Rangeley ice-out and trying to schedule fishing trips. Here is what I know….or think I know…

  1. Ice is already out in most of New England and already up to central Maine. For most places it is the earliest ever. When I find some relevant articles, I will post links. Ice in more northern Maine locales is still frozen solid and this week ushered in colder weather with snow and night time temps in the teens. If you look at webcams from Moosehead Lake or Bosebuck Camps you can check the status of the ice.
  2. The long-term outlook is for average or below average temps for early April. This may delay ice out and water warm up. However, I am still think ice out will be in mid-April in Rangeley and threaten the all-time record set several years ago. Snow is about gone so the ground will warm up fast and that will raise the ground water temperature.
  3. What does this mean for the fishing? Maine opened the season last week so it means that it is now legal to fish everywhere. I know people are catching trout in small streams. Smelt will run early, once the lake temperatures rise into the low 40’s. Last time the ice went out in mid-April, it took a number of weeks before the smelt ran. But smelt, suckers, black-nose dace, shad, stripers, etc. will all migrate or spawn several weeks early at least.

    4. Is Spring Far Away?

Given the mild winter and thin or non-existent ice, it is looking like an early start to the fly fishing season. While I don’t ordinarily gear up to fish until about May 1, this year I am going to be ready a full month earlier, especially since I have found some places in Massachusetts, Vermont, and southern New Hampshire that might fish well early in the season, although some of it depends on when some of these streams are stocked. Even the Rangeley area of Maine may be fishing well by the end of April.

We are nearing the end of fly fishing presentation season, and I must say that I always enjoy giving presentations and talking to avid fly fishers about my presentations or my books. Anglers always seem thankful to hear another location, fly pattern, or technique to try. I guess that’s what makes fly fishing great  –  the constant search for more knowledge. It is a life-long learning sport for sure.

I’m Dreaming of a Rainbow Trout Christmas

Well, the strange end of 2015 continues with continued warm weather. I  do not hesitate to admit that the latest I have every fly fished in Northern New England is the first couple days of December. But this year I am making an exception. I ventured forth on December 10 to the Lamprey River, fishing with my friend Sean Smith who may know more about that river than any man alive.

The air temperature was in the upper 50’s and the water temperature still a reasonable 42. I was fishing with a ten-foot nymphing rod with a two fly rig and a small strike indicator. The top fly was a bright pink egg pattern and the lower fly was a size- 18 yellow nymph. We started fishing in a relatively shallow run – less than three feet deep and probably closer to two. Not the water you would ordinarily find fish in during the winter when they usually  hole up in deep pools with slow currents.

I flipped the rig out right in front of me for the first cast and the indicator traveled perhaps three feet before it stopped. I thought I had hooked bottom because my indicator was set rather high for such a shallow run. When I tightened up, I was astonished to feel the pulse of a fish, and when it turned, I was surprised at the size. A short time later I twisted the hook free of an 18-inch rainbow.

Late Fall Fishing

Busy with late guiding, travel and book deadlines, and then my website melted down for awhile. For yet another fall, weather seemed to shift by a full month. September was like a typical August, and October was similar to a typical September. Water remained low in October and even by mid-October hadn’t cooled enough to move many fish. Upper Dam did fish fairly well and when I guided there, most of my clients and other anglers were catching a number of brook trout (mostly smallish) and some big salmon. Casting Soft-hackle streamers into the faster currents and high stick nymphing on the edges of the faster water took the most fish.

I guided some in southern Maine, looking for freshly stocked fish in the upper Presumpscot or the Royal and sea run browns in the Mousam. Fishing remained relatively spotting and in southern New Hampshire stockings were postponed or eliminated because the water was so low. People were still harvesting beans and tomatos in October because of the absence of a killing frost.

Another dry and hot September

As the recently late Yogi Berra once said….It is deja vu all over again. Last September was very dry and warm and the fishing suffered. This September has been more of the same. The seond and third week of September featured daytime temperatures in the 80’s even in the western Maine mountains, Great North Woods, and the Moosehead area. Some night time temperatures didn’t fall below 60. We used to get daytime highs like that in September. River and surface lake temperatures responded by warming into the low to mid 70’s. Trout and salmon rarely move or take flies when water temps are above 70. Even water below bottom release dams such as Azischos reached the high 60’s.

We got one rainstorm that dropped over an inch of rain but it was quickly absorbed and rivers only rose for 24 hours. No significant is forecast. Fishing has been limited to the first hour or last hour of the day for the most part. We have caught some decent fish but they been hard-earned.

Is It Summer Yet?

 The above photo is Height of Land overlooking Mooselookmeguntic Lake after a thunderstorm passed by. My next book, “Flyfishers Guide to Northern New England” is in the final editing phase. I have been doing a lot of photography for the book. I will sprinkle some of my favorite photographs from the last month or so throughout this post. Coming soon, I will post my favorite videos of my summer fishing trips as well.

As we head towards the middle of August, we really haven’t had any hot weather this summer, north of Massachusetts. Yesterday, August 9th, the temperature of the Kennebago River several miles below the dam was 61 degrees. Even the very surface of the lake barely reaches 70. The salmon and trout have remained active all summer and the spawning run may begin soon if we get a good dose of rain. Anglers are raising good salmon in the river and there are still sporadic Hex hatches and other size 14 brown mayflies (and their spinner falls) on the lake that bring trout up to the surface right at dusk.
