Hi Folks, my website is infected with some virus so some of you may see random words that are meaningless. This may force me to undertake a long overdue redo of my website.

I apologize for the long time between posts. How time flies when you are shoveling snow. Here is what the front of my house looks like.
I have been busy giving presentations around the eastern US although a few have been snowed out. I apologize to those hoping to see my presentation in Somerset NJ but I was coming down early that Saturday morning and the bulk of the snow was between NJ and Maine and I just couldn’t make it.

The End of the Season

           Well, the official season has ended and I have to say, it ended with a whimper instead of a bang. No appreciable rain meant low water, not a lot of fish moving, and those that were available were pounded day and night by desperate fisherman. The Mags, Kennebago, Rangeley River, Moose River, and many others were as low as I have ever seen them. The Roach river had better flows but at the expense of first Roach Pond which looked like it was going to be drained.  It doesn’t feel like fishing to me when there are 100 fish stacked up in a small pool waiting to go upriver, and 8 fisherman flogging the water over them. When one is hooked, I am never completely sure whether they were legitimately hooked, or perhaps snagged in the mouth.

         There were a few nice fish to be had in less crowded conditions but they were hard-earned. What a strange late summer and early fall. Of course it seems that I write about strange weather more and more lately. Mid-August seemed more like early fall. Days in the upper 60’s, nights in the 40’s and regular rain. Good trout and salmon started their spawning runs early in most of the Rangeley area rivers and streams. Kennebago River was full of salmon and some good trout, all the way up to the dam. Some of the salmon were bright and fat like they were fresh up from the lake. Some were a little thinner and darker and looked like they had been in the river for a few weeks. Others were thin and looked like they came up the river in June. So basically, fish have been migrating upriver all summer.

My future son-in-law Brian and I had one morning when we hooked 30 salmon in one Kennebago River Pool. (and that is no exaggeration). For some reason, the fish didn’t want to chase streamers or dries but nymphing deep with stoneflies in the main flows was deadly. We caught nice salmon and trout in other places as well. Might have been the best fishing in years.

After fishing hard the first week in September and talking to a number of people, it was clear that the fish hadn’t started moving yet. The temperatures had been fairly warm as well. August Action

Perhaps as a make-up for the lousy weather, high water, and challenging fishing during much of May, June, and even July, the fishing in August was the best that I can remember. Rangeley rivers fished well with certain pools holding a concentration of salmon and trout. Many lake fish ascended the rivers during the flushes of water from the rain and then when the water warmed into the low 70’s, they holed up near incoming cooler tribs. Colder nights in early August returned the water temps into the mid to high sixties and the fish went on a feeding spree.
Kennebago Lake fished well because hatches were late and spread out and the water stayed cool enough for fish to stay in the shallows and feed instead of decending to the thermoclines. It was ironic that with most of the anglers gone, a few lucky anglers had a number of summer evenings where they could cast to rising fish without any other boat nearby.
The lower Magalloway below the dam continued to fish well with many smaller fish falling to nymphs and dries and the occasional monster caught with big streamers or nymphs.

Interesting Summer

The erratic weather certainly continued in July and so did the erratic fishing. Many rivers remained blown out for much of the early part of the month and by the time the water came down, the continued warm nights raised the temperatures quickly.
